What is Trauma?

Basically, any event or experience that overwhelms one’s capacity to cope and that continues to be held in the body without the support and presence of an empathic and attuned person.

It is our internal experience, as a result of an overwhelming event, and not the event itself that may lead to someone becoming traumatized.

Trauma is the loss of connection to our own true self and to others. Thus, the healing of trauma is the reconnection to ourselves as well as to others and the re-establishment of our profound interdependence with all things.

Examples of traumatic types of events may include but are not limited to:

  • any act of violence and/or abuse towards any person of a physical, verbal, emotional, sexual, financial, and/or neglectful nature
  • sexual assault or harassment
  • sudden loss
  • surgeries, medical procedures, medical conditions, chronic illness
